Sea level affected by global warming

Sea level affected by global warming which was caused by an increase in land temperature as well as the temperature of the sea. This consequently results in a rise in sea level. The rise in sea water temperature makes the water expand and increase in volume, which causes a periodic rise in the level of sea water. The sea level is estimated to have had a minimum rise of 2.5 cm over the past 100 years. By 2100, global warming affect rising sea water levels will be as high as 32 inches.

How will melting of Arctic ice affect sea levels?

An increase of additional 2° in global temperature will lead to total melting of the Greenland ice cap.

  • It has been estimated that melting Arctic ice will lead to a 5 – 6 m rise in sea level.
  • This will lead to submerging of even low-lying spots such as US Gulf Coast, Tuvalu, Lakshadweep and Bangladesh.
  • In case there is a melting of the entire Antarctic ice sheet, there will be a 10.m rise in the global sea level.
  • In case there is even a 22-inch rise in global sea level, islands such as Maldives will get submerged.
  • Even important cities such as Florida, Shanghai and Mumbai will go underwater similar to Atlantis – the lost ancient city.

The gradual submerging of Maldives is a grave example of how a rise in sea water level can impact modern civilization. At this rate, mankind is likely to encounter forced evacuation due to flooding.

Possible catastrophic disasters due to sea level rise

Other than submergence of cities in low regions and flooding, rise in the level of sea water will also cause a rise in water pressure over the seabed. This will consequently cause shifts in tectonic plates, which would ultimately lead to volcanic eruptions, frequent earthquakes and large-scale disasters such as tsunamis.

  • Flooding due to climate change will cause loss of fertile agricultural land, livestock and crops.
  • Possible submergence of densely populated cities such as Shanghai, Singapore and New York will reduce the livable area for humans by a significant measure, leading to forced migration for millions of humans.
  • The latest study by the World Bank has revealed that hundreds of millions of humans would be forced to leave their homes by the end of the present century.

The solution lies in immediate measures by governments of all developed and developing nations to reduce emission and other problems that lead to global warming. Collaborative and immediate measures are the need of the hour.
