White Christmas in Finland

White Christmas in Finland

White Christmas in Finland is a fascinating experience

White Christmas in Finland falls in the beginning of the Nordic winter, the temperatures usually drop down to sub zero degree during the month of  November.  There is a big temperature difference from the Arctic Finland to the southern Finland, snow is almost guaranteed to be on the ground in the Arctic region for Christmas.  The lakes start to freeze over around October- November, and by December in the far north, the ice may be around 30 cm by the end of December. There is a lot of variation from year to year, in the worst case scenario the lakes don’t freeze up, or they thaw out with a week long warm spell.  Frozen over lakes are a must for many snowmobile and husky dog safaris, the lakes are used for cross country tracks that the safaris follow on their excursions.

White Christmas in Finland Safaris

Safaris distance and the duration vary a lot, some are for several hours only, others are day long or even overnight hut camping.  Snowmobile safaris may go for a week, covering hundreds of kilometers per day,  Some safaris travel from the Arctic Finland down to the Barents Sea in Norway, safaris should have an experienced guide or two with competence to manage the group and to evaluate the weather conditions and to travel safely with confidence.  A competent safari guide does not take risks, risk taking is for the inexperienced that are not professionally trained. I hope this video gives you some idea what the winter environment of Arctic Suomi is like so  that you can plan your holiday for a meaningful time.  See safari guide at the East Finland from here. Arctic photography in the Arctic circle is great fun

Fun it is if you enjoy being active and dynamic in the winter snow environment, whether skiing cross country, toboggan rides down a slope, alpine skiing or snowboarding or snowmobile safari out in the backcountry.  Whatever the season is there are opportunities for capturing something of interest in the winter season. Opportunities do come once you do venture out into the outdoors and keep your eyes open.

Plan well in advance

Trip to the Arctic region during the winter season needs to be planned well, there is a smaller margin for error during the winter season. During the summer and spring season, it is much easier to get around from place to place and indoors warm accommodation is a must. During the summer season, it is possible to camp in a campervan or a tent at a camping site.  In the winter, it is not possible to do so.  Watch the video for some pictures taken in various seasons of the year.  Hopefully, it gives you a better idea what it is like in the Arctic circle of Finland. Enjoy the video viewing of the Arctic photography.

Arctic Suomi

Arctic Suomi

Arctic Suomi has a fascinating natural environment region to explore and to discover it in any season.  It really is an Arctic environment with a unique biodiversity to the proximity to the North pole.  Over time, slowly the plants have adapted to the climate that it experiences today.

Arctic Suomi is a great natural environment.

Arctic Suomi has a great natural environment in any season of the year. The winter is more popular for some people for their recreational reasons of skiing, snowboarding, snowmobile touring and also for the Christmas holiday season. The end of the year school holidays in many parts of the world and the February-march school holidays in the Nordic, Scandinavian and Europe region makes the winter season more popular because the holidays fall during that season. Some people do also get holidays during the June-August months of the year. The peak summer season in the Arctic Suomi region is during the June to August months. Some variation from year to year, with the August month being the beginning of the Autumn season.
